The UK’s smart meter rollout has reached a major milestone, with over 25 million installations since the programme began in 2012. However, new data from ElectraLink suggests the pace of installations is slowing, raising concerns about whether the UK will meet its long-term energy targets.
A Slowing Pace of Installations
In February 2025, 194,000 smart meters were installed—4% fewer than the same time last year. The first two months of 2025 saw a 13% decline compared to early 2024, showing a noticeable slowdown in deployment.
Despite this, the rollout is still progressing faster than in its early years. Recent years, including 2021, 2022, and 2023, had slower starts, meaning there is still time for numbers to pick up.
The regions with the highest number of installations remain consistent:
- East England – 23,000 installations
- Southern England – 21,000 installations
- East Midlands – 19,000 installations
