Great British Energy to Slash Energy Bills for 200 Schools and 200 Hospitals with Rooftop Solar Panels

by | Mar 21, 2025

A new £200 million investment from the UK government and Great British Energy will see rooftop solar panels installed on 200 schools and 200 NHS sites—a move expected to save up to £400 million over 30 years and drastically cut energy bills.

Announced by Energy Secretary Ed Miliband, this is the first major project from Great British Energy, the publicly owned clean energy company launched to help the UK become a “clean energy superpower.” The solar rollout is part of the government’s Plan for Change—a strategy to rebuild and modernise public services while addressing the climate crisis.

Powering Pupils and Patients

With schools and hospitals facing soaring energy bills, this investment couldn’t come at a better time. Schools have struggled with rising costs that eat into education budgets, while the NHS, as the UK’s largest public energy user, now spends nearly £1.5 billion a year—more than double its 2019 bill.

By installing solar panels:

  • A typical school could save up to £25,000 per year
  • A typical NHS site could save up to £45,000 per year
  • Some larger trusts could save hundreds of thousands annually

The first installations are expected by summer 2025, just in time for schools to benefit in the new academic year.

Savings will be reinvested directly into education and healthcare services—improving care for patients and boosting opportunities for pupils.

Supporting Communities and Green Skills

In addition to schools and hospitals, local authorities and community energy groups will receive £12 million to support local clean power projects, such as:

  • Community-run solar farms
  • Onshore wind turbines
  • Small-scale hydropower schemes

An extra £9.3 million will support similar projects in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. These projects aim to empower communities to generate their own renewable energy and cut bills locally.

Selected schools in areas such as the North East, West Midlands and North West will also partner with further education colleges to deliver green skills training—creating career pathways in renewable energy and construction.

A Real-World Impact

Examples of solar success are already visible across the country:

  • Leeds Teaching Hospitals saved £75,000 annually with a solar car park canopy
  • Hull University Teaching Hospital saved £250,000 a month during summer
  • Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust’s solar farm is expected to power the site for 288 days a year, saving up to £20 million over two decades

This project is just the start. Great British Energy, backed by £8.3 billion over this Parliament, aims to scale up clean energy across the country—bringing bills down, boosting jobs, and improving public services.

What This Means for Households

While public buildings are leading the way, you don’t have to wait to benefit from clean energy.

Through government-backed schemes like ECO4 and the Great British Insulation Scheme, you could qualify for free energy-saving upgrades, such as:

✅ Solar panels
✅ Loft or cavity wall insulation
✅ Air source heat pumps

These upgrades could help you cut your energy bills significantly—and they’re free for eligible households.
