1.6 million pensioners are set to be left in the cold due to the cutting of the Winter Fuel Payment: a vital £300 payment that helps with high energy bills.
It has been summarised that 1.9 million pensioners are currently earning less than 60% of the national average income. 300,000 of this number receive aid through the pension credit system, this is their eligibility for the Winter Fuel Payment.
1.6 million will be abandoned to fend for themselves in the cold, struggling to afford both heating and eating.
What is Happening to the Winter Fuel Payment?
The Winter Fuel Payment will be cut for many pensioners across the country, a decision made by the Government after a surprise £22 billion wedge in the country’s finances that was discovered after the takeover of the Labour party.
Winter Fuel Payment Concerns
The charity Age Concern and numerous fuel poverty charities have voiced worries about potential higher fatality rates this winter, thanks to the decision made by the government. The elderly, sick, and vulnerable individuals who can’t pay to heat their homes are all vulnerable.
What Can Be Done To Help?
Only those receiving Pension Credit or other means-tested benefits will receive the payment this year and further into the future.
- Age UK: the charity are dedicated to opposing the means-testing of the Winter Fuel Payment as it means that around 2 million at-risk pensioners who critically need this money to keep warm will not get it and face a dire situation because of it. Sign their petition to do your part and save the payment for those who need it.
- Free Home Improvement Grants: government-backed grants aimed at helping those who need it the most save vital amounts of money, in this case, money that could potentially save their lives. Being eligible for this grant means that you could receive free home energy upgrades like a brand-new heating source, solar panels, and home insulation.
- Octopus Energy Help: Octopus Energy announced that it will carry on with its £30 million assistance into this winter for those pensioners not able to qualify for state support. Octopus also offers other initiatives such as: free electric blankets, thermal imaging technology, energy savers, and saving sessions.
