Keir Starmer’s promise to cut energy bills by up to £300 by 2030 is facing a significant challenge, according to a new report from Energy UK. With energy costs set to rise in April, the industry body is calling for “urgent action” to keep this goal on track.
The Challenge Ahead
- April Price Hike: The average energy bill is set to rise by £111 a year from April, making it harder to achieve the promised reductions.
- Clean Energy Transition: While the shift to a clean power system is crucial for long-term savings, the benefits won’t be immediate.
- Lack of Action Plan: Energy UK criticises the government for not having a clear plan to bring down household bills.
Energy UK’s Recommendations
To achieve the £300 cut, Energy UK proposes several measures:
- Flexible Energy Use: Encourage households to use appliances during off-peak hours, when demand is lower and renewable energy is abundant.
- Reduce Reliance on Imported Gas: Investing in renewable energy sources to lessen dependence on volatile global gas markets.
- Incentivise Flexibility Equipment: Encourage the use of batteries, heat pumps, and electric vehicles, which can save households £115 a year by using energy at non-peak times.
- Shift Policy Costs: Move policy costs from electricity bills to gas bills and general taxation, which could significantly reduce electricity bills, especially for homes with electric heating.
- Increased Government Investment: More public funding is needed to meet clean power targets and lower bills.
Government Response
The government maintains that its plan to become a clean energy superpower will lead to lower bills in the long term. They highlight ongoing efforts to improve grid connections and support energy-saving upgrades for homes.
