How Heat Pumps Work

A heat pump is an electrically powered device that absorbs heat from the air, ground or water around a building.

For example, air-source pumps suck in outdoor air and pass it over tubes containing refrigerant fluids to produce heat.

Please see the below video from the BBC to see how a heat pump works.

How efficient are Air Source Heat Pumps?
Air source heat pumps typically have an efficiency rate of 300%, though the best ones can reach much higher rates.

This means that on average, your air source heat pump will produce three units of energy for every unit of electricity it absorbs.

To put this in context, the average UK home uses just over 12,000 kWh per year for heating, and your heat pump would be able to provide the same amount of heat from just 4,000 kWh.

Do Air Source Heat Pumps still work in the winter?

Modern air source heat pumps are efficient both in the winter and summer, thanks to an outstanding SCOP (seasonal coefficient of performance). You will find that despite some slight fluctuations, they can run efficiently year-round.

Do Air Source Heat Pumps make lots of noise?

Unless the heat pump is working very hard (ie in cold weather or producing high temperature water), you can expect the noise to be a similar volume to a fridge.
