The UK government has a plan called the Great British Insulation Scheme. It helps poor families save money on heating by making their homes more energy-efficient with various insulation methods.
A £1 billion scheme aims to upgrade insulation in 300,000 homes, helping households save up to £400 on energy costs.
How much can you save on energy bills?
The Great British Insulation Scheme aims to reduce energy bills by improving home efficiency. Insulation prevents heat loss, this barrier protects heat from escaping through walls, windows, and lofts.
Cavity wall and loft insulation can save you money and reduce C02 emissions. The savings can amount to about £350 to £400 per year. Additionally, the insulation can help reduce C02 emissions by 600 to 670kg annually.
What does the Great British Insulation Scheme include?
If you are eligible, the outlined options below offer insight into what could be available to you.
- Loft insulation: a quarter of your home’s heat escapes through its roof.
- Insulating material can fill the cavity in homes built between 1920 and 1990. This is for internal and external solid wall insulation.
- Insulating under the floorboards with glass or mineral wool can prevent heat loss through the flooring.
- Add solid floor insulation on top of existing concrete or screed for extra insulation.
- For a pitched roof, you use and install rigid insulation boards between and over rafters for pitched roof insulation.
- Park home insulation: insulation methods for mobile homes.
- Room-in-roof insulation is placed between rafters to trap heat and create a blanket effect under walls.
- Secondary heating interface: secondary heating controls can help you keep track of spending and energy usage.
Who is Eligible for the Great British Insulation Scheme?
This scheme is available to 2 groups and aimed at those who could not qualify for the ECO4 scheme:
General Group
Homes with an EPC rating of D-G and within council tax bands of A-D in England and A-E in Scotland & Wales. If you are eligible, you will receive at least one of the available insulation options.
Low-income Group
Like ECO4, this group needs to receive a means-tested benefit or live in low-energy social housing. However, the Great British Insulation Scheme is specifically for those who currently use gas. They also require having an EPC rating of D-G. You will receive heating controls and one insulation measure.
The Application Process
The application process is simple, involving a user-friendly online form created to guide you through the steps. It includes questions aimed at determining your house type and energy rating.
The form will inquire about your location, energy supplier, the type of house you live in, and whether you already have insulation.
