Have you been struggling with constant rising energy bills to find yourself having a prepayment meter installed in your home, even without your consent? Well, you might now be eligible for compensation, thanks to a new ruling from the UK’s energy regulator, Ofgem.
Over 150,00 Households Have been Affected by a Prepayment Meter
Ofgem has discovered that eight major companies broke the rules by forcibly installing prepayment meters in homes that had fallen behind on gas and electricity payments. In response, these convicted suppliers are now paying a combined £18.6 million in compesation and writing off part of customer’s debt.
The energy companies invloved include:
- Scottish Power
- EDF
- E.ON
- Octopus
- Utility Warehouse
- Good Energy
- TruEnergy
- Ecotricity
Depending on your situation, you could recieve:
- £40 to £500 for improper installation
- Up to £1,000 if you’re a vulnerable customer (e.g. households with young children or mental health concerns)
Government Intervention
Energy Secretary Ed Milidband called the move a step toward justice:
Consumers must come first… we are reforming the energy market to stamp out bad practice and make it easier to access proper redress.”
Some big names like British Gas, Utilita, and OVO Energy, are still under investigation, so even more households may soon be eligible for compensation.
