The drive to increase the country’s solar revolution has been fast-tracked with the number of homes installing them rising and the approval of three more large solar farms in the east of England.
More solar is on the way
Ed Miliband, newly appointed Energy Secretary under the Labour government, has given the go-ahead for building three large solar farms. Together they will produce around 67% of solar energy and will be located in:
- Gate Burton, Lincolnshire
- Sunnica Energy Farm, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire Border
- Mallard Pass, Lincolnshire and Rutland Border
Ed Miliband is extremely passionate about tripling the amount of solar power in the country by the year 2030 and has confidently stated that:
“I want to unleash a UK solar rooftop revolution.”
He went on to say:
“We will encourage builders and homeowners in whatever way we can to deliver this win-win technology to millions of addresses in the UK so people can provide their electricity, cut their bills and simultaneously help fight climate change.”
What is Great British Energy?
Before the election, Labour proposed Great British Energy, a new publicly owned energy company. This initiative, funded by a windfall tax on oil and gas giants, promises to reduce energy bills and create a robust energy infrastructure in the UK. There have been concerns though, with some fearing the loss of jobs in the oil and gas sector.
The promise has always been for Great British Energy to spearhead investments in wind and solar projects, alongside pioneering new technologies such as offshore wind, hydrogen, and carbon capture storage.
