Clean Energy: UK Must Act Boldly Now

Jul 15, 2025

Britain is at a crucial clean energy crossroads. To hit its 2050 net-zero goal, and to ensure affordability and security, the UK must dramatically accelerate the shift to renewable electricity now and beyond 2030.

Why the Rush for Clean Energy?

According to the National Energy System Operator (NESO), current clean energy rollouts are too slow. Their 10-year forecast suggests that the UK will only reach around 148 GW of renewable capacity by 2035, well short of the 170-190 GW needed for net-zero alignment. Currently, the UK risks emitting 30% more CO₂ than target pathways allow.

NESO warns: without urgent measures, we’re heading toward 274 million tonnes of carbon emissions in 2035.

Government Has a Plan, but Delivery Matters

Ed Miliband has launched an ambitious Clean Power Action 2030 Action Plan. In short, they aim for:

  • 100% of electricity demand met by clean power by 2030
  • 95% low-carbon generation (≤5% unabated gas)

This includes:

  • Prioritise grid connections for major green projects
  • Investing roughly £40 billion per year (2025-2030) in energy infrastructure

It’s a once-in-a-generation plan, but it has tight timelines.

What’s the Hold Up?

  1. Slow grid connections & and planning delays – new projects can take years to get live
  2. Supply chain constraints – rising costs and halted offshore wind builds (e.g., Hornsea 4) are limiting growth
  3. Backup power needs – without sufficient storage/hydrogen, some natural gas will still be needed in the short term

Clean Energy Matters to Everyday Lives

  • Energy bills: Clean power could reduce household costs, though savings may not arrive until after 2044
  • Jobs & Growth: Accelerated renewables mean new jobs and economic opportunities, especially through public and private investment
  • Stability: Cleaner power = less reliance on volatile global gas markets

Are We Doing Enough?

There is growing critique:

  • NESO’s warnings signal falling behind
  • The Financial Times cautions that 2030 targets may be missed with faster infrastructure rollout. But strong political momentum remains: Ed Miliband is pledging climate action, and major reforms like the Great British Energy Act and a push for onshore wind are underway

What You Can Do

  • Demand faster, cleaner projects: Support planning reforms, which get renewables built
  • Champion storage & hydrogen: To back up renewables during low-wind or low-sun periods
  • Push for community benefit: Local energy projects can boost jobs and access
  • Stay informed: Follow the NESO update and Labour’s Clean Power 2030 progress

Britain has all the tools, technology, policy, and public support to meet clean-power targets. But determined action is needed now to turn ambition into reality. Delay risks higher bills, lost jobs, and missing climate goals.
