UK Renewables Power Over Half of National Electricity Demand in 2024

by | Mar 28, 2025

The UK has hit a clean energy milestone. For the first time ever, renewables met more than half (50.8%) of the country’s electricity demand in 2024, according to new government statistics.

This marks a significant increase from 2023’s record of 46.4% and highlights the UK’s continued shift away from fossil fuels toward low-cost, low-carbon energy sources like wind and solar power.

The data, released in the latest Energy Trends report by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, also shows that a record 144.7 terawatt hours (TWh) of clean electricity was generated in 2024—up 6.5% from 135.8TWh in 2023.

Wind Takes the Lead

Wind power continues to lead the renewable charge, contributing:

  • 29.5% of total electricity (84.1TWh)
    • Offshore wind: 17.2% (48.9TWh)
    • Onshore wind: 12.3% (35.1TWh)

Thanks to stronger wind speeds and increased capacity, wind energy now forms the backbone of the UK’s clean energy mix.

Other Key Sources

  • Solar power generated 5.2% (14.8TWh)
  • Nuclear energy contributed 14.25% (40.6TWh)
  • Combined, low-carbon sources (renewables + nuclear) delivered 65% of the UK’s electricity

Meanwhile, fossil fuel generation fell to 31.5% (89.7TWh)—a level not seen since the 1950s.

What This Means for You

A cleaner energy mix doesn’t just help the planet—it lowers your bills too. Renewable energy is often cheaper to generate, and by relying less on volatile global gas markets, the UK can shield households from future price spikes.

“The UK is moving rapidly away from fossil fuels to low-cost renewables which bring down consumer bills,” said Jane Cooper, Deputy Chief Executive of RenewableUK.

But the shift needs continued support. Industry leaders are calling on the Government to maintain a stable framework for investment, especially with plans for the next round of clean energy projects.

One major concern? A potential zonal pricing model that could charge different energy rates depending on where you live—creating what some fear would be a postcode lottery for energy bills.

Want Lower Bills and a Greener Home?

While the national grid is going greener, you can take action at home too. Government-backed schemes like ECO4 and the Great British Insulation Scheme offer free energy-saving upgrades to eligible households, including:
Solar panels
Loft and wall insulation
Air source heat pumps

These upgrades can dramatically cut your energy bills and carbon footprint—and they’re completely free if you qualify.
