Every three months, Ofgem sets a new Energy Price Cap, which can sometimes mean an increase in energy bills. Since last October, the government has been subsidising energy prices through the Energy Price Guarantee (EPG). The EPG protects households from rising energy costs by limiting how much energy suppliers can charge. But, this is all about to change in April and is expected to significantly impact thousands of people’s energy bills and overall cost of living. 

What exactly will happen in April?  

As announced earlier this year, the Energy Price Cap will be reduced from £4,279 to £3,280 in April for someone with typical energy usage. The bad news is, instead of paying just £2,500 set by the Energy Price Guarantee (EPG), the government will cut the energy bills support from April. You will be paying 20% more toward your energy bills. Check what other government schemes are on offer. 

In previous months, the EPG has assisted in lowering the energy bills of millions of households. With the 20% increase, UK households will struggle to pay their energy bills after April. 

How you can avoid the increase affecting you?

1. Take small steps at home to become more energy efficient such as turning off unnecessary lights, closing curtains, and turning down radiators.   
   
2. Get assistance in the form of an alternative government scheme. As part of the government backed ECO4 scheme, the major energy companies are funding solar panels, new heating systems, insulation, and more.
