Could your electricity bill be about to drop? If you live in Scotland, some energy experts say the answer might be yes—very significantly.
Greg Jackson, the founder of Octopus Energy, says Scotland could end up with the lowest electricity bills in Europe if the UK moves to a new pricing model called zonal pricing.
What Is Zonal Pricing?
Right now, the wholesale electricity price is the same across the whole of Great Britain, no matter where you live. The price is set by the most expensive source of power running at the time—usually gas, even if most electricity being used locally comes from cheaper renewables like wind or solar.
Zonal pricing would change that. It would mean energy prices reflect what’s being generated in your region—so if you live somewhere like Scotland that produces a lot of cheap, clean power, your bills could fall sharply.
“Bills in Scotland could be cut significantly—by hundreds of pounds a year in some areas,” says Jackson.
That’s because Scotland already produces more electricity than it uses, with most of it coming from renewable sources like wind power.
So, What’s the Catch?
While the idea sounds great for Scots, not everyone is on board.
Other energy companies, including Scottish Power and SSE, say zonal pricing would create a postcode lottery where people in different parts of the UK pay wildly different rates for the same electricity.
They’re also worried it could cause chaos for the £75 billion of investment planned to “rewire the country”—including building new pylons and upgrading transmission networks to move renewable energy around the UK.
“Let’s bring down bills for the whole of the UK,” said Keith Anderson, CEO of Scottish Power.
“Then we can decide if zonal pricing is necessary.”
They argue that wind farms can only be built where it’s windy, and say a focus on zonal pricing might divert investment away from Scotland to other areas.
Could Scotland Attract More Industry?
Jackson believes lower electricity costs could attract data centres and other energy-intensive businesses to Scotland—reducing the need to transport electricity long distances and making the energy system more efficient.
But Scottish Power disagrees, saying data centres need to be close to major population hubs to work effectively.
What Happens Next?
The UK Government is reviewing how electricity prices are set, and is expected to publish its decision this summer. Both sides of the debate say they want to lower bills and increase clean energy—but they disagree on how best to do it.
No matter what the outcome, the discussion highlights how important renewable energy is to the future of household bills across the UK.
